Lower Abdominal Pain




Inflammatioan of the appendix, or appendicitis, is the most common cause of lower abdominal pain. It may begin in the center of the abdomen, then usually though not always move to the lower right abdominal pain. In addition to pain, the victim may suffer nausea and fever. In children, the fever will be higher than in adult . The pain may be mild , but will become more intense if pressure is applied. If you suspect appendicitis, never give a laxative, do not eat or drink, do not give any pain-killer or other medication and do not use a hot water bottle. The only safe home treatment is to apply an ice pack until a doctor can examine the patient. If the pain stops suddently, this may mean that the appendix has burst, creating a far more serious condition than the original appendicitis itself.

Constipation can cause pain and a felling of fullness in the rectal area. Constipation may be caused by faulty diet, emotional upset, or weakness of the abdominal muscles. It may also be a symptom of a more serious condition. If it persists, a doctor should be consulted.

Women may suffer lower abdominal pain during menstruation. They may experience menstrual caramps not only in the lower abdomen but also in the back or down the legs. If the pain occurs midway between menstrual periods, it can range from mild to severe. Such pain, which may be confused with appendicitis, is caused by the normal process of the ovum, egg, leaving the ovary and beginning its passage to the uterus.

Other causes of lower abdominal pain in women include disorders of the lining of the uterus; infection of the Fallopian tubes; and rarely, ectopic pregnancy. Pregnancy occurring in the Fallopian tubes instead of in the uterus.

An obstruction in the large intestine causes cramplike pain, with constipation vomiting, and abdominal tenderness. Intussusceptions, a condition in which a part of the bowel telescopes into itself, sometimes appears in young children. Blocking also may be caused by adhesions, tumors, or ruptures in the abdominal wall.
